Soong Joo Ven and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai capped a victorious day for Malaysia at the Korea Masters by reaching the semi-finals with dominant victories over their respective opponents.

Goh-Lai were first to register their names to the last four after they overcame the Singaporean husband-wife pairing of Terry Hee-Tan Wei Han 21-16, 21-11 in just over 30 minutes, while Soong needed 48 minutes to beat Misha Zilberman 23-21, 21-18.

Soong’s impressive run came in the aftermath of his exclusion from the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships and Thomas Cup, and he would make a bigger statement should he overcome Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the semis.

Against Zilberman, the world number 68 exuded composure in both games.

In the first game, Soong cut a steady figure against his opponent who stayed hot on his heels throughout the first game to force deuce after the Malaysian held game point at 20-17.

Zilberman then took a 21-20 lead, before Soong clawed back to win 23-21.

Both shuttlers traded point for in the second game until 13-13, when Soong upped the tempo to ease away and come away with the win.

Goh-Lai, meanwhile, should fancy their chances of reaching a third final in two tournaments when they play China’s Ou Xuan Yi-Huang Yi Qiong on Saturday.

The world number 13 pair recently saw an upturn in performance after training with former Indonesian doubles specialist Candra Wijaya in Indonesia for several weeks earlier this year.

Since then, they reached the final of the Swiss Open and recorded comprehensive victories in this tournament so far.
