Bagaimanapun, nasib berbeza ditempuhi pemenang pingat perak beregu lelaki Sukan Olimpik Rio, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, yang diberi tentangan sengit sebelum melepasi pusingan kedua.
Selepas selesa menawan set pertama 21-16, V Shem-Wee Kiong dipaksa berhempas-pulas sebelum menyingkirkan Berry Angriawan-Hardianto dari Indoensia 21-18.
