Cheam June Wei finished runner-up of the Kaohsiung Masters after the Malaysian lost in straight games 15-21, 12-21 against home shuttler Lee Chia-hao in the men's singles final on Sunday.

It was always going to be a challenge for Cheam against the home favourite, and the world number 61 found it hard to adapt to the flow of the game, as his unforced errors in both games costed him the match against his more composed opponent.

But despite the straight game defeat, it has been a great week for Cheam who did well to reach this final in Chinese Taipei.

Seeded sixth in this Super 100 event, the 27-year-old beat all his opponents from Chinese Taipei, Singapore and India in straight games to face an in-form Lee who had taken out second seeded Wang Tzu-wei to book his berth.

Cheam had also won the Lin Dan Cup last week and collected a prize money of RM132,000 which is equivalent to a Super 500 prize purse on the World Tour.

For Lee, it would a tournament to remember after the world number 31 beat four Malaysians to win his maiden World Tour title.

Lee had beaten Jacky Kok, Ong Zhen Yi, Justin Hoh before completing his fairytale triumph over Cheam in front of his home crowd.
