Cheam June Wei revealed top notch facilities and positive vibes in Dubai as he joined the training camp hosted by reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen.
The world number 71 Malaysian joined the most talked about independent training camp in the Middle East, having Axelsen, world champion Loh Kean Yew and last year’s All-England semi-finalist Mark Caljouw, among others for company.
“Viktor is a fantastic host, and I feel so welcomed here. Everyone is so committed to helping each other out. It’s surely an eye-opening experience for me here. The facilities are top notch and the training atmosphere gives you positive vibes,” he told The Star.
Cheam had the conversation about Dubai when he spoke to Loh at the India Open in New Delhi in mid-January, and made the decision to join Axelsen after the Dane gave him the green light to come over.
“Since leaving the national team last year, I have not had any systematic training. Joining Viktor here provides me with an ideal training atmosphere although it’s only for two weeks. I didn’t want to waste more time coming back to Malaysia.
“There would be the Chinese New Year celebrations distractions and quarantine period and I would need to start from scratch again,” he said.
Cheam is desperate to revive his career that stagnated since the 2020 Asia Team Championships where he claimed the scalp of several top shuttlers to help Malaysia to the final.
Last year he had only two quarter-finals showings as his best result, and he started off this year with another last-eight appearance to show for in the three events he competed in India.
Seeing that Cheam was also not selected for the upcoming Asia Team Championships next month, he would have more time to refine his game before competing in his next tournament at the Swiss Open.
Axelsen, in a recent interview with Astro Arena, divulged into the details of his training camp including an intense morning training session, followed by an afternoon session with drills and gym work with a break in between.
The world number one’s wish was for everyone to show up and “give 120 percent” in every session at his training camp.
He also said that Lee Zii Jia can join him and the rest in Dubai at any time.
Besides Cheam, Liew Daren also told Stadium Astro he got the nod from Axelsen to go over to Dubai.
