Indonesia Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik into final after pulsating comeback win
Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik booked their place in the Indonesia Open men’s doubles final after beating home pair Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Erich 12-21, 23-21, 21-13.
It was a sensational come-from-behind victory for the second seeds, who reached their second final of the year after the India Open in January.
The world number three pair now have another crack in their bid to claim a first World Tour title against Asian champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the final.
The Malaysians were not at the races in the first game, as they were put under sustained pressure by the Indonesians who looked fluid both in defence and attack to claim an easy 21-12 lead.
But the pep talk from national coaches Rexy Mainaky and Tan Bin Shen clearly worked, as Chia-Soh came out guns blazing to turn the heat with an all-out attacking display.
That strategy worked as they led the game, but Kusumawardana-Erich stayed closely in the hunt and incredibly took the lead at match point.
The world champions fought tooth and nail to win the next point after a 50-shot rally to force deuce, which they crucially converted 23-21.
Losing the second game clearly took the sting out of the Indonesians, who couldn’t find their rhythm and the Malaysians capitalised by racing to a 11-5 lead.
They kept the pressure on their opponents, who also saw Erich struggling with fitness to seal the all-important victory and silence the deafening home roar at the Istora Senayan.
