Lee Zii Jia stormed back from a game down to win his Indonesia Masters opening match, and he was joined by Leong Jun Hao who also produced a fine performance to beat Kenta Nishimoto in straight games.
Despite conceding the first game, Lee battled back to beat India’s K.Srikanth 19-21, 21-14, 21-11 as he continued to find his way into form this season.
The world number 10 had made it to the India Open quarter-finals last week, and there were some concerns that he may exit earlier after losing a competitive first game.
But to his credit, the Kedahan turned in a more attacking display which proved too much for Srikanth.
Lee’s cross-court smashes were the highlight of his victory, which he will look to replicate against Angus Ng Ka Long on Thursday.
Leong meanwhile overcame his Japanese opponent 21-17, 21-17 to set-up a second round meeting against top ranked Indonesian Anthony Ginting.
In the mixed doubles, four Malaysian pairs came through to the next round.
As it turns out, two pairs will face each other to confirm at least one berth in the last eight.
Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See will square off against Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, while Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai face South Korea’s fourth seeds Kim Won-ho-Jeong Na-eun.
Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei meanwhile will take on Indonesia’s Rehan Kaufal Kusharjanto-Lisa Ayu for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Women’s singles Goh Jin Wei exited after a straight game defeat against China’s Han Yue along with K.Letshaana who lost to Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani.
It was also the end for mixed doubles pair Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee.
