Menteri Belia dan Sukan, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, meminta semua pihak menghormati dan memberikan ruang kepada jaguh badminton negara, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, dan anggota keluarganya.
Syed Saddiq berkata beliau mengikuti perkembangan kesihatan Chong Wei sejak awal sebelum pemain berusia 35 tahun itu ke Taiwan hingga sekarang.
“Atas kehendak Chong Wei sendiri juga, saya telahpun memaklumkan khabar kesihatan beliau kepada Perdana Menteri, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, dan (isteri) Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
“Kementerian Belia dan Sukan sentiasa bersedia memberikan sokongan sepenuhnya kepada beliau yang menjadi ikon dan wira rakyat Malaysia,” katanya menerusi satu kenyataan hari ini.
Terdahulu, Presiden Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, mengesahkan pemenang pingat perak Sukan Olimpik sebanyak tiga kali itu telah didiagnosis menghidap barah hidung peringkat awal.
Mohamad Norza berkata Chong Wei berada di Taiwan bagi mendapatkan rawatan sambil berehat untuk sembuh bersama keluarga dan kawan rapat.
Pada Julai lalu, BAM mengeluarkan kenyataan menyatakan Chong Wei tidak akan mengambil bahagian dalam dua kejohanan utama disebabkan masalah kesihatan serta telah dinasihatkan agar berehat oleh doktor selepas menjalani rawatan berikutan masalah berkaitan pernafasan.
Dua kejohanan utama berkenaan ialah Kejohanan Dunia dan Sukan Asia Jakarta-Palembang 2018 yang masing-masing berlangsung bulan lalu.
