Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz likened Lee Chong Wei’s return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to arguably the most famous movie phrase of all time – “I’ll be back”.
That line from the movie Terminator – made famous by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger – is now referenced to Lee’s return to the national body as a council member.
BAM president Zafrul announced the news on Saturday, which marks Lee’s first official post in BAM since he retired as an athlete back in 2019.
Lee has promised to make changes in his new role to restore badminton and particularly the men’s singles to its heights where he held the world number ranking for 349 weeks.
In order for the 42-year-old to implement his ideas, the three-time Olympic silver medalist must first be given enough authority to enforce it.
Lee must also be complimented with a team that shares his vision and is passionate about turning the fortunes of the national team.
Being a council member will allow Lee to work more closely with the national singles coaches Kenneth Jonassen and K.Yogendran.
The national icon is familiar with both men, having played against Jonassen 10 times from 2003-2008 and was of course former team-mates with Yogendran.
Lee will come into his new role with experience, as he is also a committee member on the Road To Gold (RTG) programme.
The three-time World Championships silver medalist frequently shares his thoughts on badminton in his role, and he will now be able to translate that in BAM as well.
It is imperative that BAM also recognize how they can utilize Lee’s influence and experience, and afford him a role that would allow him to directly be involved with the men’s singles plans and progress.
Besides the RTG, Lee is also a board member on the National Sports Council and a sports ambassador for Johor.
