The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to suspend the Guatemalan Olympic Association (COG) with effect as from October 15, and issued a final warning to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The impending suspension came after Guatemala's Constitutional Court provisionally suspended several of the COG's statutes and regulations, and did not recognise the result of the COG's elections held earlier this year that named Gerardo Aguirre as the association's president.

The suspension would mean that Guatemalan athletes would be unable to represent the country in the Olympics and related international competitions, and the association would not receive any IOC funding.

The Central American Games, which Guatemala is due to co-host with Costa Rica beginning on October 27, could also be affected.

India could face similar punishments after failing to hold its quadrennial elections last December due to an ongoing court case.

According to an official statement, the IOC would consider the IOA's immediate suspension in December 2022 if the matter is not resolved by then.

It was also decided that the IOC Session, which was due to take place in Mumbai in May 2023, would be postponed until September or October 2023.

India was previously banned between December 2012 and February 2014 for holding elections in defiance of the Olympic charter and appointing officials facing corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The next Summer Olympics takes place in Paris in 2024.
