Lee Zii Jia cruised into the Denmark Open after coasting to a 21-15, 21-10 victory over Dutchman Mark Caljouw to set up a second round clash against Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama.
The Denmark Open marked the first top-tier event in almost three months, and so there was some element of rustiness expected even from the established stars.
But Lee, looking to bounce back after three early exits on the trot, did not waste time to secure the 36-minute victory.
The fourth seed next takes on Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama in the second round on Thursday.
Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah were also comfortable in their 21-16, 21-14 triumph over Thai pair Supissara Paewsampran-Puttita Supajirakul, but face a challenging test against top seeds Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan next.
In the men’s doubles, eighth seeds Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi did well to beat Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang 21-18, 22-20, and face another Chinese combination in Liu Yu Chen-Ou Xuan Yi next.
These were the only Malaysian representatives through to the next round on the first day as the rest failed to get past their first-round encounters.
They included Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin.
World champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and Liew Daren are amongst the Malaysians in action on the second day of the Super 750 event on Wednesday.
