Coronavirus: BWF to consider freezing world rankings

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are mulling the possibility of freezing the world rankings after they welcomed the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Tokyo Olympics to 2021.

The global spectacle was rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but no later than summer 2021' due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"BWF are looking into the possibility of freezing World Rankings until international tournaments start again.

"However, we are still working on the technical solution to ensure the freezing and eventual un-freezing of World Rankings works fairly for all players.

"For our athletes, we will review any impact on the Olympic and Paralympic qualification system to ensure a fair solution is found to qualify players for the postponed Games," read an official statement.

National men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia concurred with the decision to postpone the Games.

"The situation is very serious now, so I definitely agree with the delay.

"Postponing the Olympics will give us more time to prepare. It is a major event and we need to take it seriously," said Lee.

International shuttlers are also doing their bid in these challenging times.

World number seven women’s singles shuttler P.V.Sindhu donated Rs 10 lakhs ($231,000) in a bid to help her country combat the virus.

The badminton calendar will be set for an intense schedule once the coronavirus situation is defused.

To date, the world body has postponed the Indian Open, Malaysia Open, Singapore Open, Asian Individual Championships, Thomas & Uber Cup as well as the New Zealand Open.
