Newly appointed women’s doubles chief Chan Chong Ming believes he has what it takes to raise his shuttlers' to the next level, with the help of former world number one pair Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty.
Chan is one of two new faces, along with men’s doubles chief Flandy Limpele, who were recruited by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in a coaching reshuffle in May.
The 40-year-old officially reported for work at the Academy Badminton Malaysia on Tuesday and took time to meet his new pupils in a light session.
Chan, a former world number one himself, had yet to lay down any markers for his team but was looking forward to working with Chin and Wong.
“I think we have a solid team for the women’s doubles, and I am looking forward to working with them. They have already been here sometime, so their feedback and comments will really be useful for me,” Chan told Stadium Astro.
The three-time Commonwealth Games champion took over from Rosman Razak, who is now part of Flandy's team in the men’s doubles.
Chan returned to the national fold for the first time since leaving the setup as a shuttler in 2007, where he was known for his partnership with Chew Choon Eng that saw the duo briefly conquer the world rankings in 2002.
His main mission would be to improve three pairings currently ranked in the world top 40 – Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean (14th), Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen (25th) and Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah (39th).
“At this point, I don’t want to comment about goals just yet. I will need to observe them for at least two weeks before making any initial assessment.
“But I have discussed with coach Rosman about each player before taking over,” he added.
