Malaysia are guaranteed a men’s doubles semi-finals berth at the China Open after Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik staged a comeback in their second game to advance to the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Chia-Soh beat Christo-Toma Junior Popov 21-17, 21-18 to advance to the semis, where they will meet either Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub or Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
After winning a close first game, Chia-Soh trailed the French brothers 7-13 and 10-15 and it looked like the match would head to a decider.
But Chia’s tumble serve started to cause problems for their opponents, and the Malaysians also took more risks in their offence which paid off.
They sealed the second game thanks to their late momentum to stay on course for a good outing at the Olympic Sports Center.
Chia-Soh will need to do well in this Super 1000 event, which is the final tournament for the top-tier shuttlers before the World Championships takes place next month.
Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi also impressed as they overcame Thai pair Kittnupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh 21-16, 21-16.
Should they overcome India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the last eight, there will be another all Malaysian men’s doubles clash in the semis.
Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei also advanced to the mixed doubles last eight, along with Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah in the women's doubles.
Chen-Toh will face Chinese pair Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui, while Tan-Thinaah will be up against an Indonesian or Japanese pair.
