Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei pulled off one of the biggest comebacks of the year after they saved nine match points to beat home pair Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui 14-21, 23-21, 21-16 at the China Masters quarter-finals on Friday.
The unbelievable 65-minute victory at the Shenzhen Gymnasium confirms the national mixed doubles top pair entry into the semi-finals, where they will next face China’s top seeds Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will head into that match full of confidence after their epic comeback against Guo-Chen.
Having lost the opening game, the Malaysians were trailing their opponents 11-20 and looked certain to exit this Super 750 event.
But the world number 10 duo patiently worked their way through the rallies and achieved the impossible, thanks to some good fortune and their opponents’ frayed nerves.
Guo-Fang Hui saw one shot sail just wide at the baseline, even though initially the linesman called it in.
That decision made the Chinese pair even more jittery, and when Fang Hui had an excellent chance to finish the game, she sent a net shot wide with both the Malaysians stranded.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei forced the issue to deuce before winning the second game, and that gave them the surge of confidence to clinch the overall victory after closing out the deciding game 21-16.
Malaysia will have two national mixed doubles pairs in the last four after Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin easily beat Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng-kuan-Hsu Yin-hui 21-10, 21-16.
The world number 23 pair will next face Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Yin Suet for a place in the final.
