Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin produced a shock upset at the China Masters after they stunned second seeded home pair, with Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin joining them in the quarter-finals.
Hoo-Cheng have shown significant progress in their partnership and have a knack of upsetting higher ranked pairs.
On Thursday, they were at it again after beating China’s Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 16-21, 21-14, 21-19 to book their second consecutive quarter-finals berth.
The 51-minute victory over their world number three opponents sets up Hoo-Cheng, who are ranked 23rd, against Chinese Taipei pair Chen Cheng-kuan-Hsu Yin-hui.
Fourth seeds Chen-Toh were also impressive in their 14-21, 23-21, 21-8 victory over French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue.
The national mixed doubles top pair will next face Chinese pair Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui for a place in the semi-finals.
Goh-Izzuddin also came through after a dominant 21-18, 21-16 victory over Chinese Taipei’s scratch pairing of Wang Chi-lin-Chiu Hsiang-chieh.
The world number eight combination, who have already won three top-tier tournaments in the last three months, will face Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Pahlevi on Friday.
Karyaman-Pahlevi booked their berths after a surprise straight game victory over top seeded Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.
