Several top seeded men's singles shuttlers, including 2016 Olympics gold medallist Chen Long, unexpectedly lost in the first round of the 2018 Perodua Malaysia Masters.
The Chinese star was not at his best as he was beaten 17-21, 15-21 in straight sets by Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.
"There were several umpiring decisions that did not go my way and made things difficult," he said after the defeat.
"However, I cannot blame the umpire. It is my fault for not playing well today."
World No. 5 Son Wan Ho's exit was another surprise as he lost to Malaysian representative Liew Daren 15-21, 13-21.
"I am very happy because I did not expect the victory. It was quite easy," said the world No. 88, who had only beaten the Korean once in their previous five meetings.
"I do not know why; maybe it was because my opponent was not used to the court."
Another seeded player to follow them out of the exit door was Chou Tien Chen as he was defeated by Indonesia's Jonathan Christie 21-11, 24-22.
As for the rest, Wang Tzu Wei and Angus Ng Ka Long lived up to their seedings to progress to the second round, while Viktor Axelsen, Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei have yet to get into the action at the time of writing.
