The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have accepted the resignation of national women’s doubles head coach Chan Chong Ming, who just joined the national body last year.

“After careful consideration, the BAM has reached a decision to accept the resignation letter tendered by women’s doubles coach Chan Chong Ming on December 29. The 41-year-old left his position by mutual consent after joining in July 2020,” said BAM in a statement.

Chan’s resignation should come as a blow to the women’s doubles department, as the former world number one had improved Malaysia’s performance in various team events over the years.

His training methods and keen eye to identify his players’ weak spots and improve them resulted in the growth of Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean and more recently Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah.

Prior to Chow's retirement after the Tokyo Olympics, she and Lee had done well this year by reaching three semi-finals on the BWF World Tour events to hover just outside the top 10 spot at 12th.

But Chan’s work in Pearly-Thinaah was also paying big dividends as he guided the young pair to the Swiss Open title earlier this year.

The combative pairing now sit 16th on the world rank, and are expected to break into the top 10 by next year.

It is not known if Chan’s resignation had anything to do with the recent coaching reshuffle, which saw Rexy Mainaky head the doubles’ departments, while the men’s singles unit is overseen by Wong Choong Hann.

Before the reshuffle, all coaches reported to Wong directly as the national coaching director.

The other remaining coach in the women’s doubles department is former men’s doubles shuttler Hoon Thien How.
