BAM take U-turn over Misbun termination

In a bizarre twist, the Badminton Association of Malaysia reversed their termination of Misbun Sidek, offering the former national shuttler an opportunity to see out the remainder of his contract till the year end.

"The first option is for Misbun to work till the end of his term and help prepare the juniors for the World Junior Championships [in September].

"But if he decides not to continue, I will meet him and try to resolve the matter amicably," said BAM president Norza Zakaria, who added the decision to sack Misbun was due to miscommunication.

"I was informed by my task force committee that Misbun agreed to terminate his contract prematurely."

According to Norza, Misbun was brought in to find the next generation of players based on his track record of nurturing the likes of Lee Chong Wei and Roslin Hashim.

But with the juniors not showing any progress under the former world number two, the taskforce went ahead and pulled the plug on his services last week.

The 63-year-old then called for a press conference on Monday to tell his side of the story and insisted he never agreed to the mutual termination as claimed by the national body.

Misbun had gone to add that he knew the mistakes to be fixed ahead of the World Junior Championships and that he should be given a shot at guiding his place at the world Junior meet.

It remains to be seen if the former national junior development director will re-assume his post and return to the national body.

Norza also said he will be stepping down from his presidency role by the year end.
