The Badminton World Federation (BWF) failed to garner enough votes in amending the scoring system at its Annual General Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, last Saturday.
The world body's proposal of changing the current 21-point best-of-three scoring format to 11-point best-of-five only managed to receive 129 out of 252 votes from BWF members, 39 short of a two-thirds majority for the change to take place.
A related proposal to reduce on-court coaching and introduce time-outs was subsequently withdrawn.
"Our membership has spoken and we respect its decision to retain three games to 21 points, though clearly our proposal resonated with a significant section of our membership," BWF president Poul-Erik Høyer was quoted saying by the BWF's official website.
"Many opinions were expressed from the heart today and it was obvious this was a fundamental matter which delegates deliberated thoughtfully and thoroughly – and I thank them for their diligence."
