There are two Malaysian pairs in the Badminton Asia Championships quarter-finals after Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai bagged hard earned victories on Thursday.

Mixed doubles couple Goh-Lai were the first pair through to the last eight after the Swiss Open finalists came from behind to beat China’s Cheng Xing-Chen Fang Hui 12-21, 22-20, 21-15.

The Malaysians, who were also pushed to three games in the first round, take on Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari for a place in the semi-finals.

Ong-Teo also had to make a comeback after going a game down, but pushed hard after that to come away with a priceless 10-21, 21-15, 22-20 victory over Japanese duo Ayato Endo-Yuta Takei.

The eighth seeds next face Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto on Friday in a contest promising to be an intriguing battle.

Meanwhile, it was the end of the road for last year’s finalists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who lost out in a nail-biting contest 21-14, 16-21, 19-21 against Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin.

The world champions could have taken this match if not for some questionable decisions that gifted their Chinese Taipei opponents the win.

Following them out of the tournament were Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who put up a good fight against Praveen Jordan-Melati Oktavianti, but the Indonesians used their experience well to come away with the 21-23, 21-18, 15-21 win.

It may have been a different story for Chen-Toh had they converted the match point in the first game.

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, meanwhile, had to retire against Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi after Tee suffered an injury in the second game while trailing 3-11.
