Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi put on a dynamic performance to stun top seeds Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto, joining Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai in the Badminton Asia Championships semi-finals.

It was a sensational Friday for the Malaysian contingent in Dubai as both pairs posted commanding victories to keep the country’s interest alive in Asia’s premiere individual competition.

While Goh-Lai had to battle nerves of steel before easing past Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-17, 15-21, 21-19, Ong-Teo stunned their top seeded opponents in straight games 22-20, 21-15.

Coming into this match with a 3-7 win record against the Indonesians, Ong-Teo needed to be at their best to oust the world’s top men’s doubles pair.

They did just that as they executed their strategy to perfection with Ong dictating the back court and Teo finding neat winners at the front.

Fajar-Alfian were also having an off-day as they committed many unforced errors, but Ong-Teo deserve credit for constantly applying pressure to throw their opponents off their game.

The victory was sealed in 37 minutes, and now the eighth seeds face either Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi/Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana in the semis.

Earlier, mixed doubles pair Goh-Lai also made it through by a slim margin against their Indonesian opponents.

Goh was the standout player in this contest, with a ferocious attacking display that netted most of the pair’s points to come away with the 55-minute win.

The Malaysians face an even tougher test on Saturday as they are due to take on top seeds Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong.
