In the mixed doubles, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing also did well to beat Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas 21-19, 21-18 to set up a meeting against Yuki Kaneko-Misaki Matsutomo.

The Japanese pair had earlier came through a bruising three-game thriller to beat scratch pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei 21-19, 22-24, 21-17.

It was also an early exit for national women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who lost 13-21, 21-15, 15-21 to Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara.

Tan-Thinaah had beaten them at the German Open quarter-finals last week, but the Japanese were way more consistent and frustrated the Malaysians to come away with the win.

It was also an unfortunate end for Goh Jin Wei in the women's singles, after she had to concede a walkover in the deciding game against Yvonne Li and retired.
