M.Thinaah-Pearly Tan dished out one of the biggest upsets of the All-England opening round after they dumped out fourth seeds women’s doubles pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajonglai 21-17, 23-21 early Thursday.

Lee Zii Jia joined them after a straightforward win in the men’s singles, as well as men’s doubles’ Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.

But the headline belonged to Swiss Open champions Thinaah-Tan, who ousted the world number eight pair and were playing with full confidence.

“It was an unexpected, but a welcomed victory for us. We played well in our rotation, and our communication and strong belief in each other was key to winning. We will try to maintain this consistency in the next match,” said Pearly after the win.

The Malaysians play Jessica Hopton-Jenny Moore for a place in the quarter-finals.

Lee cruised to the second round after disposing of Canada’s Brian Yang 21-13, 21-10 and takes on Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus next.

If he wins, the Kedah-born could play Kento Momota in the last eight. The world number one, returning to competitive action in over a year, was lethal in a straight game win over P. Kashyap and faces another Indian H.S. Prannoy next.

Prannoy set up the Momota meet after he beat Liew Daren 21-10, 21-10.

Malaysia’s interest in the women’s singles ended after Soniia Cheah and S. Kisona both lost.

Cheah was no match for P.V.Sindhu who won 21-11, 21-17, while Kisona was given a lesson in a 6-21, 7-21 humbling to Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

Goh-Tan play Denmark duo Mathias Christiansen-Niclas Nohr after they overcame Germans Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel 21-11, 21-18.

Ong-Teo have a far tougher assignment as they take on Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo-Yuta Watanabe in round two.

In the mixed doubles, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing did well to get past Japan’s Takuro Hoki-Nami Matsuyama 21-13, 21-13 and play English pair Steven Stallwood-Annie Lado next.

Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei were also through to set up an encounter against in-form French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue.

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Goh Soon Huat-Lai Pei Jin are in action on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Badminton World Federation confirmed that the Indonesian contingent would not be able to compete in the tournament after one person within the team tested positive for COVID-19.

As a result, all the Indonesians’ scheduled opponents will be given a walkover.
