Lee Zii Jia will meet Kento Momota for a place in the All-England Open semi-finals after the Malaysian pulled off another impressive 26-24, 21-11 victory over Canada’s Brian Yang in the second round.

This mouth-watering showpiece is a repeat of last year’s quarter-finals, where the reigning champion beat the world number two in straight games almost a year to the day of this match.

The match against Momota is likely to be another closely fought affair, with both shuttlers coming into this contest having won once each in their last two encounters.

Liew Daren failed to follow Lee into the last eight after the veteran shuttler went down fighting 21-18, 13-21, 9-21 against fourth seed Chou Tien-Chen.

In the women’s doubles, Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah made it into the quarter-finals after a hard-earned three-game 18-21, 21-19, 21-16 victory over Japan’s Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi to book a meeting with South Korea’s Jeong Na-Eun-Kim Hye-Jeong.

Thinaah was content with the pair’s performances, especially after their first-round exit at last week’s German Open.

“It feels good to be here in the quarters, especially after last week where we played badly. This is a new week and I hope we can continue to keep up our momentum in the last eight,” she said.

In the mixed doubles, seventh seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing also came through with a 21-19, 21-17 victory over Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh-Supissara Paewsampran to set up a clash against Chinese second seeds Zheng Si Wei-Huang Qiong.

Zheng-Huang had earlier thrashed Ong Yew Sin-Goh Liu Ying 21-5, 21-15, while Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See also lost in straight games to Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Melati Oktavianti.

Ong had also lost in the men’s doubles with Ong Yew Sin, going down 22-24, 21-13, 17-21 to Indonesia’s Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana.

However, the biggest disappointment was arguably Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik losing 15-21, 19-21 to China’s He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang.
