Malaysia men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik hope to improve their game with video analysis sessions ahead of a gruelling badminton calendar.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky recently introduced it as part of a three-part daily training session to aid national pairs who are part of the Road To Gold programme, including Chia-Soh.

The world champions, looking to bounce back from their poor start to the year when they compete at next week's Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Dubai, said the video analysis was helpful.

“The session has helped us to rectify the common mistakes and reduce our unforced errors. So far we have been working on improving our skills, tactics and being more connected during matches. We hope these will help us,” Chia told Bernama.

Rexy had previously said the motive of the video analysis is to help the shuttlers understand their game better and improve, instead of only verbalising it to them.

Chia said he couldn’t reveal more on the video analysis due to privacy issues, but English mixed doubles pair Gregory Mairs-Jenny Moore gave a glimpse of what it may entail.

In a YouTube video released last year, they said they did analysis on their opponents for eight years including before and after matches.

Some of the key findings were analysing their opponents’ common serve and return patterns, opponents’ key strengths and weaknesses, their mentality and attitude, as well as the respective shuttlers’ own strengths.

Chia-Soh, who are seeded second for the BAC, have a tough test in the opening round as they face Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin, who beat them at the All England last month.
