Zverev stunned by comeback king Fils at Miami Open
Alexander Zverev crashed out of the Miami Open following a comeback defeat by Arthur Fils on Wednesday.
The top seed was sent packing from the ATP Masters event, as Fils came from behind to prevail 3-6 6-3 6-4 and book his place in the quarter-finals.
The Frenchman endured a difficult start to the contest. He was forced to undergo treatment on his back during the opening set, in which Zverev broke in game eight before holding to draw first blood.
Nevertheless, Fils broke in game two of the second set, while maintaining his own serve to level.
Zverev landed the first blow of the decider, breaking in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead.
However, Fils broke back immediately, then, crucially, in the top seed's next service game, before eventually sealing a memorable victory by holding to 15.
Data Debrief: Fils partying like it's 1999
Fils, who will play Jakub Mensik in the last eight, became only the second Frenchman to defeat the top-seeded player at the Miami Open, after Sebastien Grosjean beat Carlos Moya 26 years ago.
Also a quarter-finalist at Indian Wells earlier this month, he is just the third man from France to reach that stage of both Sunshine Double events in the same year, after Yannick Noah (1986, 1987 and 1989) and Gael Monfils (2016).
