Sophia Popov put herself in a strong position to claim a first major title in the Women's British Open on Saturday and holds a three-shot lead heading into the final round at Royal Troon.

World number 304 Popov made an eagle and two birdies to go four under for her round and the tournament overall, with Minjee Lee and Thidapa Suwannapura the German's nearest challengers on one under.

A 30-foot put for birdie on the 17th bolstered Popov's hopes going into Sunday.

Midway leader Daniela Holmqvist excelled to be the only player under par on a wet and blustery Friday but fell from contention with a third round 77.

Two-time major champion Lydia Ko struck a one over 72 to sit six shots off the leader. The former world number one's previous success came at the 2018 Mediheal Championship.

Emily Kristine Pedersen and Kristen Gillman are alongside Ko on two over, with American duo Austin Ernst and Lindsey Weaver a shot better off in joint fourth with Popov's compatriot Caroline Masson.
