Patrick Reed finally broke out of his season-long slump Saturday to surge into the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.
It appeared Reed was headed for a huge season after leading the U.S. to an emphatic Ryder Cup win last fall. But Reed has struggled to show the same promising form, while also dropping seven spots in the world rankings during that time.

Reed shot a 5-under 67 Saturday, in still tough conditions, by birdieing his last two holes to finish with six birdies and just one bogey to get to 8 under.
Reed, who has not finished in the top 10 in an event since the Tournament of Champions in January, is looking for his first win since The Barclays last summer.
Spanish rookie Jon Rahm reclaimed his familiar spot near the top of the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 in Round 3 to get to 7 under. He is tied for second with Alex Noren, who won three times on the European Tour last year.
Francesco Molinari, who grabbed sole possession of the lead early Saturday morning to finish up the delayed second round, shot even par in Round 3 to headline a group tied for fourth at 6 under.
Seung-Yul Noh, Brian Harman and Vaughn Taylor are also at 6 under.
Phil Mickelson and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson shot their way back into contention Saturday. Mickelson shot a 3-under 69 to get to 4 under for the tournament. Johnson shot a 5-under 67 to join Mickelson at 4 under.
Johnson, playing in his first event since injuring his back before the Masters, will likely have to fire an equally impressive round Sunday in order to win his fourth consecutive start.
