Vonn fastest in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to claim 80th World Cup win

Lindsey Vonn entered the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup's hiatus for the Winter Olympics on a high after winning for the third time this season in the downhill at Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The American, who will be a major medal hope for her country in Pyeongchang after missing the Sochi Games in 2014 due to injury, had already won the super-G in Val d'Isere in December and the downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo last month.

And success in Germany marked an 80th FIS World Cup triumph for the 33-year-old, putting her 18 clear of retired Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proll at the top of the all-time standings.

Saturday's race was shortened from two runs to one due to bad weather in Bavaria, which forced the cancellation of training runs on Thursday and Friday and prompted the competition to begin from the reserve/super-G start.

Vonn came out on top with a time of one minute 12.84 seconds to move second in the race for the discipline title, 0.02secs ahead of Italian Sofia Goggia, who continues to lead the downhill standings.

Austria's Cornelia Hutter completed the podium (1:12.97), while Vonn's compatriot Breezy Johnson was fourth, ahead of Austrian Anna Vieth and Swiss star Lara Gut.
