Team USA at the Olympics: Shaun White, women's hockey team makes history

Team USA had another successful day in Pyeongchang, adding one more gold medal to its collection after snowboarder Shaun White's impressive final run in the halfpipe while the women's hockey team kept their hopes of winning a gold alive.

The U.S. is proving to be dominant on the snowboard winning gold in four of four snowboarding events. At 17-years-old, Red Gerard kicked it off for Team USA with a somewhat surprising run securing the first gold in the men's slopestyle. Jamie Anderson followed up the next day winning the women's slopestyle while Chloe Kim, also 17, won the women's halfpipe.

Finishing off the perfect run at gold up until this point was White, who gave Team USA its 100th Winter Olympics medal while also becoming the first Olympian to win three golds in the same snowboarding event.

The U.S. women's hockey team put up an impressive performance against the Olympic Athletes of Russia securing a 5-0 win Tuesday. Next up for Team USA is a faceoff with rival Canada, who won the gold in the 2014 Sochi Games.

Team USA's men's curling team made a statement defeating Korea 11-7 in the round robin of the men's tournament with Skip John Shuster leading the team.

In the men's Alpine combined, Ted Ligety finished just outside of the podium in fourth place with a time of 46.61. He was 1.45 seconds short of a gold (won by Austria's Marcel Hirscher) and 0.43 from the bronze spot (France's Alexis Pinturault finished third). 

Who said what? 

White's third gold medal got the attention of another famous Olympian — Michael Phelps. White has compared his trials and tribulations that come with being a competitive athlete to what Phelps has overcome.

"I watched a Michael Phelps documentary, videos on him and him just going to the pool every single day, like that life I can imagine can get tough,” White said, per NBC. “Same for me [before Sochi]. The same things that got me excited and motivated weren’t really working anymore.”

Phelps took notice after White's victory and he sent some congratulations to the four-time Olympian. Phelps wrote in part, "Nothing like a good comeback right?? Redemption always feels great!!"

Three-time Olympian Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson was huge for the U.S. against the Olympic Athletes of Russia en route to creating a piece of history. She scored two goals only six seconds apart in the second period, marking the fastest two goals ever scored in Olympic hockey history.
