Scheierman takes his chance in 'special' Celtics performance
Boston Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman made the most of his chance in Tuesday's 104-96 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
Scheierman scored a career-high 20 points in a performance that had players and fans on their feet in just his 19th NBA appearance.
For Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, though, the most impressive thing was the way Scheierman carried himself, with both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown rested.
"The threes are a plus. To me it was the defensive effort and the offensive rebounding and the toughness that he played with," said Mazzulla.
"Whoever's out there, we have an expectation and a trust that they'll do what it takes to win.”
The moment of the game for Scheierman came at the end of the third quarter when he hit a three-point buzzer-beater to put the Celtics 71-70 ahead.
In the fourth, he hit three more of his career-best six 3-pointers while also scoring 13 of his 20 points.
"It's pretty special. When I hit that buzzer-beater and the crowd was going crazy, that was probably a top three environment that I've ever been a part of," said Scheierman, who has been with Maine in the development league for much of the NBA season.
"It's a lot of fun when it slows down and you feel like you're just out there playing free and playing loose."
While Tatum and Brown will come back into the side for Scheierman, Mazzulla’s support suggests that he will have no qualms on throwing the rookie back into the team should it be required.
"He's got high level toughness to him. He's got a good basketball IQ,” said Mazzulla.
“To me, it's just the consistency and the patience. You can't get discouraged. You're not defined by one day, two days. It's really just a process and the small moments you have, you've got to take advantage of them."
