New Orleans Saints star Drew Brees has donated $5million to build healthcare centres in Louisiana.

Brees, 41, and wife, Brittany, also donated $5m in March amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The quarterback announced his latest donation via social media on Monday.

"COVID-19 is changing nearly everything, from the way that we work, to how our kids learn, to the way we play football," Brees said in a video posted on Instagram.

"As we work through one of the greatest challenges of our lifetimes, our health and wellness has never been more important.

Brittany and I have always tried to address the greatest needs of our communities through our foundation and personal giving. Today we are very excited to announce another donation of $5 million in partnership with @ochsnerhealth to build numerous healthcare centers throughout Louisiana in the communities that need it most. We will continue to bridge the gap to bring healthcare, education, and economic equity to all of our communities. We are proud to bring the first of these health care centers to New Orleans East later this year.

"These health centres will offer primary and specialty care to communities who need it most and promote health equity for all."

The New Orleans Saints are due to begin their NFL season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 13.
