Overall champs Shiffrin and Hirscher too good again in Are

There was a familiar sight on the penultimate day of the 2017-18 FIS World Cup season as Marcel Hirscher and Mikaela Shiffrin stood atop the podium.

The pair were already crowned overall champions before Saturday's events in Are and Hirscher's success in the giant slalom equalled the record of 13 wins in a single campaign, set by Ingemar Stenmark in 1978-79 and Hermann Maier in 2000-01.

Hirscher was already assured of his fifth GS crystal globe and further underlined his dominance by posting a combined time of two minutes and 13.63 seconds, 0.23secs quicker than Henrik Kristoffersen, who finished runner-up in the discipline for the fifth time this season.

Victor Muffat-Jeandet (+0.26s) was third.

Like Hirscher, Shiffrin had her slalom globe secured before Saturday's race and the American showed no signs of easing up as her time of 1:46.42 proved comfortably faster than Wendy Holdener (+1.58s) and Frida Hansdotter (+1.59s).

Victory was Shiffrin's seventh in the slalom this season - surpassing her personal best of six, achieved in 2016-17.
