Oilers defenseman Adam Larsson's father dies during Edmonton visit
Oilers defenseman Adam Larsson's father has died while visiting his son in Edmonton, the team confirmed Friday. Robert Larsson was 50.
"On behalf of Oilers Entertainment Group, management, staff, players and fans, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Adam and his family on the passing of his father, Robert," Oilers president and general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement.
According to SportsNet.ca, Robert Larsson had arrived in Edmonton last week from Sweden to see the Oilers play and presumably spend the All-Star break with his son. However, Adam Larsson abruptly left the team's morning skate Jan. 25 for what the team called a "personal matter." He hasn't played since Jan. 23 and appears as if he'll remain out indefinitely.
"We'll continue to support the Larsson family and give Adam all the the time and help he needs," coach Todd McLellan said in a statement.
Just after midnight Friday morning, Adam Larsson posted an image of a dark heart against a dark background with the caption, "Dad. I love you. Always had. Always will."
Robert Larsson spent 10 seasons as a defenseman for Skelleftea AIK in Sweden's top league and was drafted by the Kings in 1988.
"Robert is one of Skelleftea's biggest backs throughout the ages, and we are deeply saddened by this message," Skelleftea club director Per-Anders Israelsson said (per Swedish daily Aftonbladet, via Google translation).
Flags flew at half-staff Friday outside the Skelleftea hockey arena, according to Aftonbladet.
