It's never easy to be an official, but after one decision by an Omaha prosecutor, it may be even tougher for states and organizations to recruit officials to work their games.

Sarpy County prosecutor Lee Polikov said Friday he would not file charges against seven individuals and two media outlets in connection with threats made against NCAA basketball official John Higgins, the Courier-Journal reported . Higgins, who lives in Omaha, came under a firestorm of criticism from Kentucky fans after officiating the Wildcats' Elite 8 loss to North Carolina.

While Polikov did refer the media outlets to the Federal Communications Commission for publishing Higgins' personal contact information and referred the names of the seven individuals to law enforcement, no immediate action was taken at this time some two months after the incident.

"Any criminal charges would be best served by deferring to authorities in the appropriate jurisdictions," Polikov said in a statement released Friday.

The inquiry stemmed out of Kentucky's 75-73 loss to North Carolina on March 26, which saw the Wildcats in foul trouble all night long. It was only made worse when Wildcat head coach John Calipari said, "It’s amazing that we were in that game where they practically fouled out my whole team."

Threats against Higgins then followed from Kentucky fans and the authorities were contacted. No specific individuals or outlets were mentioned in Polikov's statement.
