Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) failed to qualify for the AFC Champions League for the fourth year running after being taken apart by Muangthong United in the second qualifying round on Tuesday.
The Southern Tigers, who lost to the same Thai opponents on penalties at the same stage two years ago, did not have the best of starts at the Supachalasai Stadium as a failed offside trap allowed Theerathon Bunmathan to slip through and play the ball to Sarach Yooyen for an easy finish.
It was a taste of what was to come as the Malaysian Super League champions struggled to cope with the home side and were constantly stretched wihout posing any real attacking threat of their own.
Another defensive lapse saw Tristan Do make it 2-0 in the 21st minute, and the match was effectively over before the half-hour mark as Heberty Fernandes de Andrade converted from the penalty spot.
Clearly frustrated with how his team were playing, JDT head coach Ulisses Morais made a bold decision to take off Fazly Mazlan for Azrif Nasrulhaq Badrulhisham right before half-time.
It did little to inspire his team as Muangthong continued to play with a fast paced style of football in the second half.
Theerathon drilled a low shot across Izham Tarmizi into the corner of the net in the 56th minute before Heberty grabbed his second and Muangthong's fifth of the night with an excellent short-range free-kick seven minutes later.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz made the score line slightly more respectable for the Johor side with two consolation goals in injury time.
The result booked Muangthong's meeting with Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in the third qualifying round, while JDT had to settle for another year competing at the AFC Cup.
