Marsh and Pooran steer Lucknow to first IPL win of 2025

Lucknow Super Giants earned their first win of the Indian Premier League season as they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets on Thursday.
The Sunrisers struggled to find their usual big-hitting rhythm and Lucknow punished them in the chase, easily reaching their target of 191 with 23 balls to spare.
Shardul Thakur (4-34) struck early for Lucknow, getting the wickets of Abhishek Sharma (6) and Ishan Kishan (0) within the space of two balls at the start of the third over.

Travis Head (47) rode his luck with an aggressive approach and was dropped twice before he eventually fell just short of a half-century as Prince Yadav (1-29) took his first IPL wicket.
Yadav was also responsible for running out Heinrich Klaasen; the bowler had attempted to catch Nitish Kumar Reddy but instead deflected the hit onto the non-striker’s stumps, with Klaasen caught unaware as he had edged out of his crease.
Nitish (32) followed shortly after, but Aniket Verma (36) was the only other batter to hit over 20 as the Sunrisers tailed off to finish on 190-9.
Mohammed Shami gave them some hope at the start of the defence, taking Aiden Makram for a lone run inside the second over.
However, Mitchell Marsh (52) and Nicholas Pooran (70) quickly squashed any optimism as they propelled Lucknow to 120-2 by the time the latter was trapped lbw by Pat Cummins.
Cummins also took Marsh's wicket shortly after, with Rishabh Pant (15) and Ayush Badoni (6), who was caught superbly by Harshal Patel, also falling.
But the damage was already done, with David Miller (13*) hitting the clinching four to take Lucknow to 193-5 from the first ball of their 17th over.

Data debrief: Lucknow show dominance
Before this match, the explosive Sunrisers batters had been tipped to cross the 300 threshold in their innings, but they instead failed to even hit the 200 mark.
Their opening match of the 2025 competition – a victory over the Rajasthan Royals – saw them fall just one run short of their own IPL innings record, the 287-3 they posted against Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year.
Their struggles were largely down to Thakur, who has now dismissed Abhishek three times in the IPL while leaking just 17 runs in 16 balls bowled to his adversary.
The Sunrisers were also not helped by Kishan becoming just the sixth player in IPL history to be dismissed for a duck having scored a century in his previous innings.
And Lucknow's chase went off with only minor hiccups after a brilliant start - they finished the powerplay at 77-1, their second-highest such total in the IPL (the highest is 80-1 v Chennai Super Kings in 2023).
