The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) announced on Friday that they won the bid to host the 2023 FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup.

The FIH Junior Hockey World Cup is the flagship event for under-21 players and the upcoming men's edition would be Malaysia's fourth time hosting the tournament, having done so in 1982, 1989 and 2009 — the latter was jointly held with Singapore.

Meanwhile, the 2023 FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup would be hosted by Chile.

"We are grateful to the FIH for selecting our bid and awarding this prestigious event to us for a record fourth time.

"It reflects the FIH's trust and confidence in MHC to organise and deliver an outstanding competition for global hockey fans.

"For Malaysia and this region in particular, the Junior World Cup will be a catalyst for the growth and development of the sport amongst youngsters," said MHC president Subahan Kamal.

He also said the MHC would ensure the event to be an overwhelming success by investing in the necessary resources and working closely with all relevant parties and stakeholders.

"We hope conditions will have improved in 2023 and fans will be treated to stunning performances from the future stars of world hockey. We are excited to organise this event and look forward to successfully hosting this tournament.

"We look forward to welcoming everyone involved in the Junior World Cup to our beautiful country in 2023," he added.

Malaysia's best performance was finishing fourth in 1979, 1982 and 2013, while they only managed a 11th-placed finish in India in 2016.
