Instead of Japan, the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) want Khairul Hafiz Jantan to head to Germany to train for next year's IAAF World Indoor Championships.
The 2017 SEA Games gold medallist was keen on training with Abdul Hakim Sani Brown in Japan, but according to the national body, it would be too costly as well too short notice to make the necessary arrangement for him to go there next month.
Therefore, they want the Melaka-born sprinter to reconsider his choice.
"I have spoken briefly to coach Poad [Kassim] to let Khairul to train in Germany, where he will be more suitable to adjust himself for the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham," said MAF president Karim Ibrahim on Tuesday.
"I have not got the full details yet regarding this matter, but once I have it, we will discuss with the National Sports Council.
"Regardless, we will agree on a consensus and give the best to Khairul so that he can be a role model in sprinting events."
Khairul is currently nursing a hamstring injury he picked up during the SEA Games and should miss the rest of the season.
