Shane Lowry hopes either he or close friend Rory McIlroy will get over the line at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, having both moved within one shot of the lead after Saturday's third round.

Lowry and McIlroy both carded seven-under-par rounds of 65 on Saturday, dragging themselves within touching distance of frontrunner Sepp Straka.

The pair both hit a hole-in-one apiece in the first round then slipped down the leaderboard in the second round, but Saturday's action represented a return to form.

"Let's hope one of us does the business," Lowry, who partnered McIlroy for Ireland at the Paris Olympics last year, told Sky Sports.

An eagle at the second set the tone for Lowry, who coped well in difficult weather conditions in California.

Having battled through cold, wet and windy conditions, Lowry joked: "I live in Florida for a reason.

"It was like this in Ireland when I was home at Christmas and my golf clubs sat in my hall. I didn't play golf. When the weather is like that, I don't play golf anymore!"

McIlroy, meanwhile, was delighted to keep the mistakes to a minimum in tough conditions, having carded seven birdies and avoided a single bogey.

"It was a really good poor-weather performance," the Northern Irishman said. "One thing I'm trying to get better at is trying to play more bogey-free rounds.

"I think just playing a little smarter, playing the right shot at the right time, not hitting destructive shots. It feels a little more boring at times, but it's definitely more effective."
