Kecmanovic snatches Delray Beach crown as Davidovich Fokina's title wait continues
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was left to rue another missed opportunity as Miomir Kecmanovic claimed the Delray Beach International title on Sunday.
Spain's Davidovich Fokina had two match points at 5-3 up in Florida but collapsed to lose his second ATP Tour final, after falling in the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters showpiece against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Kecmanovic, ranked four places ahead of his opponent at 56th in the world rankings, claimed just a second ATP title with a 3-6 6-1 7-5 triumph, adding to his 2020 success in Kitzbuhel.
Davidovich Fokina came flying out the blocks en route to claiming the first set, breaking at a vital time to claim a 4-2 lead before holding with a set point at the first time of asking.
However, Kecmanovic's response started strong as the Serbian dropped just one point on his serve in the second set, twice breaking to breeze into the decider.
A marathon deciding set seemed to tip in the favour of Davidovich Fokina, who broke to make it 3-1 before squandering two match points when within touching distance of his first ATP title.
Kecmanovic seized the opening by winning on his opponent's serve straight after that missed chance, eventually triumphing on his second match point to win in one hour and 15 minutes.
Data Debrief: Familiar foe for
Davidovich Fokina has now lost all three of his meetings with Kecmanovic, who added this triumph in Florida to wins over the Spaniard in Basel and at the Next Gen ATP Finals.
He has now lost both of his tour-level finals and will rue not grasping his match-point opportunities, having taken just two of his seven chances at break points, a conversion rate of just 29%.
By contrast, Kecmanovic converted four of his six break-point openings, with his 67% conversion rate on chances against his opponent's serve ultimately the difference in the showpiece.
That turnaround helped Kecmanovic to become both the lowest-ranked player (56th in the world) and the first to win the final in Delray Beach after losing the first set since Radu Albot, ranked 82nd, did so in 2019.
