'Just get him the ball and get out of the way' – Bickerstaff lauds Cunningham
J.B. Bickerstaff explained his simple approach to getting the best out of Cade Cunningham.
"Just get him the ball and get out of the way," quipped the Detroit Pistons coach after Cunningham's game-winning turn against the Miami Heat.
Cunningham nailed his first career go-ahead field goal in the final five seconds of a fourth quarter or overtime as the Pistons continued their surge towards the playoffs with a 116-113 win over the Heat on Wednesday.
His 3-pointer arrived with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock. He finished with a triple-double of 25 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
"You try to get the ball in his hands, occupy the guys around him and you know that Cade's going to be able to get his shot off," Bickerstaff added, as quoted by ESPN.
"He's got the size. He's got the skill. He knows he's going to get his look. We told him to go win the game and he went and got it done."
Reflecting on the win, which was the Pistons' second on the spin after a two-game losing streak, Bickerstaff said: "That was awesome."
Wednesday's showing has Cunningham 10th in the NBA for points per game (25.6), while he is tied third for triple-doubles on nine.
The Pistons, with a 39-31 record, are sixth in the Eastern Conference.
