Joey Logano's win at Richmond encumbered after unapproved rear suspension found

Joey Logano started Sunday's race at Richmond from the rear and worked his way up through the field, using a late gamble to secure his first win of the season. But his No. 22 Penske Ford may have been a bit too good for NASCAR's requirements.

NASCAR announced on Thursday it has issued the most severe discipline, an L1-level penalty, to the No. 22 team for a rear suspension violation discovered during teardown at the R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina.

The L1-level penalty means Logano's win at Richmond on Sunday is officially encumbered. The official Richmond record will still list Logano as the winner but he cannot use the win as consideration for an automatic playoff spot. Should Logano still make the playoffs, the five playoff points that come with a victory would not apply for Richmond.

The penalty also comes with a a $50,000 fine and two-race suspension for crew chief Todd Gordon, and the loss of 25 driver points and 25 owner points, NASCAR announced. Team Penske has yet to announce its decision for an appeal.

The encumbered win is the first for a Cup Series winning team since the policy was adopted last season. Kyle Busch's Xfinity Series team was tagged with an encumbered finish in his race win at Atlanta earlier this season.
