Harmanpreet, Sciver-Brunt guide Mumbai to second WPL title
Mumbai Indians secured their second Women's Premier League title after beating Delhi Capitals by eight runs in a closely contested final at Brabourne Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing a target of 150, Delhi were struggling at 66-5 in the 11th over before South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp scored a 26-ball 40 to bring her side back into contention with 35 needed from the final four overs.
Niki Prasad also added 25 from 23 balls to move Delhi closer to a maiden WPL title but after Nat Sciver-Brunt (3-30) dismissed Kapp in the 18th over, Mumbai regained control and claimed the victory.
Earlier, captain Harmanpreet Kaur had hit a 44-ball 60 to lead 2023 champions Mumbai to a respectable total of 149 for the loss of seven wickets.
Kapp (2-11), Jess Jonassen (2-26) and Nallapureddy Charani (2-43) picked up Mumbai wickets at regular intervals, with Sciver-Brunt (30) and Amanjot Kaur (14 not out) the only other batters to get over 10 runs in the first innings.
But their efforts with the ball ensured Delhi fell to a third straight defeat in the final. They had lost the inaugural WPL final in 2023 to Mumbai by seven wickets before losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru last season.
Data Debrief: A tournament to remember for Sciver-Brunt
England's Sciver-Brunt continued her good form in the T20 tournament with useful contributions with both bat and ball in the final.
The 32-year-old finished the WPL with the most runs - 523 from 10 matches at an average of 65.37 and scored five half-centuries. She also became the first to reach 1,000 runs in the competition.
Ellyse Perry finished second on the chart with 372 runs, with Mumbai's Hayley Matthews third with 307.
Matthews and her Mumbai team-mate Amelia Kerr were tied among the wicket-takers with 18 wickets, followed by Jess Jonassen with 13. Sciver-Brunt also finished with 12 wickets - level with Bengaluru's Georgia Wareham.
