Garin saves five MPs in Chardy upset, Granollers through
Christian Garin saved five match points as he stunned Jeremy Chardy en route to the quarter-finals of the US Men's Clay Court Championship.
Garin was down 3-5 in the third set and fended off four match points before saving another in the tie-break as the Chilean prevailed 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6).
Frenchman Chardy was wasteful in Houston, where he tallied 13 double faults in the three-hour marathon on Wednesday.
Garin will face Henri Laaksonen in the quarters after the Swiss qualifier defeated Ryan Harrison 6-4 7-5.

Marcel Granollers – the 2008 champion – advanced to his first quarter-final since July after easing past Bernard Tomic 6-1 6-2.
Granollers only needed 47 minutes to oust the Australian, converting all five break points he earned on the American clay midweek.
Casper Ruud – who shocked fourth seed Reilly Opelka 4-6 6-4 6-4 – awaits Granollers in the last eight of the ATP tournament.
