A former Kentucky basketball staffer who went on to operate a management group has been charged with felony fraud for bilking clients out of almost $1.3 million.
A federal grand jury in Kentucky handed up the indictment late last week, charging Leon Smith with 14 counts of fraud, aggravated identify theft and money laundering involving four athletes between 2011-15, according to a copy of the indictment obtained by Yahoo Sports.

The alleged victims in the scheme are identified in the indictment only by initials, but unidentified sources told Yahoo Sports that three of the four are Utah Jazz guard Shelvin Mack and former NBA players Darius Miller and Josh Harrellson, all of whom reportedly are represented by agent Doug Neustadt.
Smith, who ran Lexington, Ky.-based Legacy Pro Management Group and Legacy Athlete Management, is alleged to have used his authorization to conduct financial transactions on his clients' behalf and access to their bank accounts to siphon $1.298 million of the athletes' money into his own business accounts.
If found guilty of all counts, Smith could face more than 30 years in prison and forfeiture of the almost $1.3 million he is accused of stealing.
Smith played football at Kentucky for Bill Curry and after he graduated in 1995 worked in the school's athletic department until 2009, primarily with the basketball program. According to Yahoo Sports, he at one point was considered "an athletic administrator on the rise."
UK and the three players identified by Yahoo declined to comment.
