Dean & DeLuca Invitational preview: Jordan Spieth aims to regain form on familiar course

Jordan Spieth struck out in his return home last week, missing the cut with a quadruple-bogey nine late in his second round. But just down the road, he gets another chance this week to ignite the Dallas-Forth Worth crowds.

The PGA Tour is back in Texas for the Dean & DeLuca Invitational this week after Billy Horschel outlasted Jason Day in a playoff last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Where is the Dean & DeLuca Invitational played?

Famed Colonial Country Club is one of the most iconic courses on the PGA Tour. The 7,209-yard par 70 is set to host its 72nd edition. Only Augusta National has a longer unbroken tenure on the PGA Tour schedule.

Known as a classic shotmaker’s layout with its tight fairways and many doglegs, Colonial even hosted the U.S. Open in 1941. Colonial also held the second edition of The Players Championship in 1975, the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open and Annika Sorenstam’s historic 2003 venture as the first woman to tee up in a PGA TOUR event since World War II.

Who won the Dean & DeLuca Invitational last year?

Spieth ended his Texas drought last year by hoisting the crown. He has also finished t-2, t-14 and t-7 here. While Spieth, now seventh in the world rankings, enters the week in rare poor form — he missed three out of his last four cuts — Colonial could be just the course he needs to see in order break out of the slump.

Who are the favorites this week?

Jon Rahm (world ranking: 12) — Rahm played terribly over the weekend at the Players, but he has otherwise been one of the best players on Tour this season. With a win and four other top-five finishes already on his resume this year, he's a threat to contend any week he enters the field.

Sergio Garcia (6) — Garcia has a t-30 and a t-20 in his two starts since winning the Masters. If the trend continues, he should be around the first page of the leaderboard this week. Still hitting the ball great, Garcia will just have to remain focused around these tough greens.

Matt Kuchar (18) — Kuchar has a t-6 (2016) and a runner-up (2013) here, and he finished t-9 last week. Though he rarely wins, Kuchar has been a model of consistency over the past few seasons. He is a top-10 machine, and should get another one this week.

Jason Dufner (64) — Despite quietly enjoying a very solid season — eight top-25 finishes already in 2017 — Dufner is rarely talked about on a week-to-week basis. The former PGA Championship winner finished t-6 here last year, and has a pair of runner-up showings (2014, 2012) as well.

Ryan Palmer (89) — After a brutal start to the year, Palmer is starting to heat up just in time for his favorite tournaments. He sports t-3, t-5, t-14 and another t-5 finish here in four of his last five attempts. He also has two top-11 finishes in his last four starts this season, which makes him an ideal candidate to contend.

Who are this week's sleepers?

Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker, Tony Finau, Paul Casey, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Kisner and Harris English will be among the other names to watch this week.

Snedeker, English and Kisner, especially, considering their strong recent track records at Colonial.

Horse for the course

It seems a forever ago that Zach Johnson was among the game's elite, but he, as Dick Vitale would say, is the "big man on campus" at Colonial.

Johnson is a two-time winner here (2010, 2012). He has also finished third, fourth, t-17 and t-19 while peppering the leaderboard on a consistent basis. This course awards accurate tee shots, fine iron play and a solid putting stroke. Johnson checks all the boxes.
