Danish duo claim GolfSixes glory
Denmark won the inaugural GolfSixes title as Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjorn Olesen saw off the Australian pair of Sam Brazel and Scott Hend at the Centurion Club in St Albans.
The European Tour's innovative new event saw teams of two facing off in six-hole greensomes contests, with Saturday's group stage followed by knockout matches on Sunday.
After reaching the final with wins over France and Italy, Denmark fell behind when Australia birdied the third.
However, Bjerregaard and Olesen came good when it mattered, winning the next three holes to take victory in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Scotland pipped Italy to third place in dramatic fashion, winning a nearest-the-pin contest by four inches after their match had finished level through six holes.
Matteo Manassero hit a fine shot to seven feet and seven inches, but Marc Warren was ever so slightly closer from the tee.
Manassero and Renato Paratore had earlier eliminated the English duo of Andy Sullivan and Chris Wood, ending hopes of a home win.
Yet Sullivan offered an upbeat view of the new event, which featured entrance music for players, celebrity hosts, greater fan interaction and the presence of an amusing six-shaped mascot.
"The whole week's been an absolute success and it's been fantastic," said Sullivan.
"I'd have loved to have gone back out there this afternoon in front of the crowds again, but it's been a fantastic week and I've thoroughly enjoyed it."
