Dance off... literally as SEA Games women's breakdancing cancelled

The women's breakdancing event at the 2019 SEA Games has been turned into a demonstration event due to lack of participants.

The host nation Philippines and Indonesia are the only participating countries for the event, one of the dancesport events scheduled to take place on Sunday in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

Due to that, the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) decided to cancel it as a medal event following an executive meeting on Thursday.

Breakdancing is one of the events all but confirmed to be added to the Olympic programme after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved its inclusion for Paris 2024 last June.

Meanwhile, 17 other events in various sports would see no bronze medals being awarded due to only three individuals/countries participating in them.

"Some [events] only have three [participants] left because some [participants] have pulled out at the last minute.

"Based on the early registration, there were four [in those events] but they withdrew.

"So, it is not [our] athletes or officials' fault," said Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy presiden Abdul Azim Zabidi.

Of those affected events, two are set to involve Malaysian athletes, namely heptathlon and men's Kyorugi (80kg).
