Shah Firdaus Sahrom clinched a bronze medal for Malaysia in the men's keirin event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

The 26-year-old track cyclist crossed the line behind winner Nicholas Paul by 0.424s and runner-up Jack Carlin by 0.018s at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

In doing so, he matched Azizulhasni Awang's men's keirin achievement in Glasgow in 2014, while Josiah Ng remained as Malaysia's first and only cyclist to win Commonwealth gold when he came out on top in 2010.

His third-place finish also ensured the national cycling contingent would not go home empty-handed unlike in Gold Coast four years ago.

Shah Firdaus reached the final after finishing first in each of the first two rounds, while national team-mates Fadhli Zonis and Ridwan Sahrom were knocked out from the first round repechage.

A day earlier, the trio narrowly missed out on bagging a medal in the men's team sprint event.
